ExactMP™ + EasyMP™: ISO 16094-2:2025 & EU 2020/2184 compatible kit

Complete kit comprising EasyMP™ and ExactMP™ microplastic reference materials compatible with the "ISO 16094-2:2025 standard: Water quality — Analysis of microplastic in water. Part 2: Vibrational spectroscopy methods for waters with low content of suspended solids including drinking water" as well as the "European Commission Directive (EU) 2020/2184 methodology to measure microplastics in water intended for human consumption". Both methodologies outline QA/QC parameters for conducting reliable measurements of microplastics in drinking water, with requirements to recovery analysis and spectral matching in terms of HQI (hit quality index) thresholds.

The compliant version of the kit comprises the below samples. While the base kit [4 samples] are compliant, 12- and 24- sample kits are also available. Standalone ExactMP™ kits can also be purchased individually.

10 polymers: PE, PP, PVC, PET, PS, TPU, PA6, PMMA, PC, PTFE.

15 polymers:+ ABS, PA66, CA, PSU, PVDF.

20 polymers:+ SBR, PLA, PA12, POM, Epoxy resin (DGEBA-based, amine-cured).

  • 1 x ExactMP™ kit [4, 12 or 24 samples]: Buoyancy kit consiting of fragments (20-100 µm) containing red (pigment red 254) PP [0.96 g/cm³] and blue (pigment blue 15:3) PET (1.35 g/cm³); each polymer at approximately 100 n per sample (total per sample, n ≈ 200).
  • 1 x ExactMP™ kit [4, 12 or 24 samples]: Buoyancy kit Fragments (100-200 µm) containing red (pigment red 254) PP [0.96 g/cm³] and blue (pigment blue 15:3) PET (1.35 g/cm³); each polymer at approximately 50 n per sample (total per sample, n ≈ 100). Learn more about ExactMP™ here.

The kit is compatible with the following requirements of the ISO 16094-2:2025 standard methodology:

  1. ISO 16094-2:2025 requires that the number characterization of particles in spiking solutions used for recovery determination is performed using an independent analytical technique (e.g. µFTIR, µRaman, SEM, optical counting, or flow cytometry).

Our EasyMP™ 10-, 15-, or 20-polymer mixtures contain microplastic fragments with a nominal area-equivalent diameter range of 10–100 µm, enabling demonstration of spectral acquisition and matching capabilities across a broad range of polymer types, including the 10 priority polymers defined in the EU 2020/2184 methodology. The large sample quantity supports multiple analyses, making the materials well suited for method testing, staff training, and instrument verification.

  1. ISO 16094-2:2025 requires recovery validation of the full analytical workflow; including sample preparation and filtration; using at least two different polymer types. Known amounts of microplastics are added to clean (<1 µm filtered ultrapure) water samples covering relevant polymers, sizes, and concentrations. Recovery is assessed through three replicate measurements. A minimum recovery of 60% is required across the claimed analytical range.

To support these requirements, the two included ExactMP™ Base Kits contain microplastic fragments representing both low- and high-density polymers; red-pigmented (PR254) polypropylene (PP, 0.96 g/cm³) and blue-pigmented (PB15:3) polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 1.35 g/cm³); within the recommended validation size ranges. Each ExactMP™ Base Kit contains four individual samples, supporting the three replicate measurements required by ISO 16094-2:2025 while providing an additional reserve sample in case of experimental failure or procedural issues. These ExactMP™ samples are designed to align with the recovery verification recommendations of both ISO 16094-2:2025 and EU 2020/2184, using polymers lighter and heavier than water while covering the recommended particle size ranges for filter recovery assessment. Strong pigmentation enables rapid verification by optical microscopy, reduces the need for time-intensive spectroscopic confirmation, and helps ensure that spike particles can be readily distinguished from indigenous microplastics in the sample or potential procedural contamination.

Certificate of Analysis (COA)

All samples are accompanied by a sample-specific certificate of analysis (COA) for each individual sample. The COA includes:

• Polymer composition
• Particle size distribution within size groups
• Number of particles per individual sample.
• Processed and raw data, including micrographs from which the data was derived

COAs are accessible via a weblink or QR code printed on each sample label.
